要旨本文 |
For decades, tropical peatlands in Indonesia have been drained and converted to other land covers, mainly oil palm plantations. Our previous study demonstrated that rewetting degraded peatlands reduced CO2 emissions by 34%. However, questions remain about whether different land covers might have varying degrees of CO2 emissions. We monitored GHG fluxes in five land covers affected by rewetting in degraded peat in Jambi, Sumatra Island. The results showed secondary forests have 2.1 times lower CO2 emissions compared to open agricultural areas, likely due to the low water table supported by forest canopies that keep soil peat moist with less evaporation. Our findings are crucial for peat restoration implementers to evaluate the effectiveness of increasing the water table while considering revegetation to maintain high peat moisture levels. |
