要旨本文 | Forest plantations, often uniform in structure and lacking understory, are prone to overland flow and erosion. This study was conducted from 2018 to 2023 in two plots (treatment and control) on a slope within a Japanese cypress catchment (2.27 ha with 2400 trees ha−1) in central Japan. A 40% thinning with felled-logs placement was conducted in early 2020 in treatment plot. We studied response of overland flow, soil and litter erosion to thinning. Paired-plot analysis shows that overland flow did not differ from pre- to post-thinning periods. However, soil and litter erosion significantly increased in the first three years post-thinning, during rainy seasons in treatment plot. Although thinning with felled-logs placement can mitigate overland flow, kinetic energy of raindrops detached unstable soil and litter in uncovered areas post-thinning and transported them downslope during rainy seasons. |
