要旨本文 | UAV-LiDAR has been used to assess tree biomass, primarily in plantation species. However, its application in diverse natural forests remains limited. This study evaluated the effectiveness of UAV-LiDAR in predicting stem diameter at breast height (DBH) and above-ground biomass (AGB) in species-rich natural forests of Japan. We analyzed 4355 individual trees representing 149 canopy species across 23 one-hectare temperate natural forest sites. Using UAV-derived crown height (H) and crown area (CA), we developed several crown-based allometric models. We show that H and CA together explain 68% variation in DBH and 71% in AGB across different forests and climatic regions. Incorporating functional type- or species-specific information further improved by 7-13%. The crown-based allometric models, especially when species identity is incorporated, can accurately estimate DBH and AGB in natural forests over larger areas dominated by various types of tree species. |
