要旨本文	The subalpine forests of Japan are a distinct and ecologically important forest biome under threat from deer browsing, global warming and small populations size effects. Some of the most endangered are southern-edge populations mostly occurring on the highest mountain peaks of western Japan and isolated by up to 400 km from nearest occurrences in central Honshu. Here we report the results of a comparative phylogeographic study of subalpine forest angiosperms based on chloroplast haplotypes and MIG-seq. We aimed to determine the diversity and divergence of 19 southern edge populations in six species and make comparison with populations from eastern Japan where subalpine forests are extensively distributed. The results of this study will inform conservation managers about the origin of southern-edge populations and prioritizing resources for their protection into the future.
