Exploring Leaf-Xylem Connection by Azimuthal Radial Sap Flow Measurement and Branch Manipulation in Fagus crenata

要旨本文 Clarifying the causes of tree-to-tree variations in the radial profile of stem sap flow is important to estimate stand transpiration accurately. To address this, we tested the hypothesis of a hydraulic leaf-xylem connection in Fagus crenata trees. Transpiration of upper and lower branches was halted through artificial leaf shading or leaf removal and subsequent changes in the radial profile of stem sap flow were examined at three different azimuths using heat field deformation (HFD) method. Overall, sap flow exhibited an almost uniform decrease across xylem depth, irrespective of shading location, suggesting an integrated leaf-xylem connection in this species.
