要旨本文 | Windstorms are major forest disturbance agents in the European Alps where post-storm salvage logging is extensively adopted to minimize economic losses. However, due to the lack of long-term monitoring data, little is known about how windthrown logs influence hydrological and sediment connectivity. We monitored and compared water and sediment fluxes from salvaged/unsalvaged 27 m2 plots after the 2018 Vaia Storm in the Eastern Italian Alps. During 46 summer storms between 2021 and 2024, the log-covered unsalvaged plot showed 31 minutes longer mean time to runoff collection and 49% lower mean sediment yield compared to the salvaged plot, indicating lowered hydrological and sediment connectivity due to windthrown logs. Our empirical evidence, coupled with runoff-erosion simulations, implies persistent effects of legacy deadwood on hillslope runoff and erosion dynamics after major forest disturbances. |
