Influence of masting on resource dynamics in fine roots of Fagus crenata individuals identified using molecular markers

要旨本文 Mast seeding or masting, referred to synchronous and highly variable seed production across years by a population of perennial plants, plays a critical role in forest regeneration and biodiversity maintenance. Although its ecological significance is widely recognized, the physiological mechanisms underlying masting remain poorly understood, with most studies emphasizing the role of internal nutrient dynamics in aboveground organs. In contrast, belowground processes, particularly those related to nutrient acquisition, remain inadequately explored, primarily due to the difficulty of distinguishing fine roots among individual trees. In this study, fine roots in a mature Fagus crenata forest were individually identified using microsatellite markers, and further classified into absorptive and transport roots by orders. Seasonal variations in nitrogen and non-structural carbohydrate concentrations in these two root types are presented.
